The Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
A Canadian immigration program designed for skilled tradespersons who wish to become permanent residents of Canada. Here are some of the key features of the Federal Skilled Trades Program
Eligible Occupations
The FSTP focuses on attracting individuals who have experience in specific skilled trades. To be eligible, applicants must have work experience in a skilled trade occupation listed in the National Occupational Classification (NOC)
System under Skill Level B. Some examples of eligible occupations include electricians, welders, plumbers, carpenters, heavy-duty equipment mechanics, and industrial electricians.
Work Experience Requirements
To be eligible for the FSTP, applicants must have at least two years of full-time work experience (or an equivalent part-time experience) within the five years preceding the application.
This work experience must be in the same skilled trade occupation they are applying under.
Language Proficiency
Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in either English or French by providing valid language test results. The accepted language tests are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
For English and the Test d'évaluation de français (TEF) for French. Minimum language proficiency requirements must be met in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Certificate of Qualification
Applicants for the FSTP may be required to have either a valid job offer from a Canadian employer for a continuous period of at least one year OR a
Certificate of Qualification issued by a Canadian province or territory. The Certificate of Qualification validates that the applicant meets the standards established for their skilled trade in Canada.
Express Entry System
The FSTP operates under the Express Entry system, which is an online immigration application system used by the Canadian government. Applicants need to meet the eligibility criteria for the FSTP and create an Express Entry profile.
The profiles are ranked based on Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) scores, considering factors such as age, education, work experience, language proficiency, and adaptability.
Points System
The FSTP assigns points to various factors under the CRS, such as age, language proficiency, work experience, education, and arranged employment.
Points are also awarded for adaptability factors, including having a spouse or common-law partner with language skills, previous study or work experience in Canada, or having a close relative in Canada.
Permanent Residency
Successful applicants who receive an invitation to apply (ITA) for permanent residency through the FSTP will have the opportunity to become permanent residents of Canada.
Permanent residents enjoy many benefits, such as access to healthcare, education, social benefits, and the ability to apply for Canadian citizenship after meeting residency requirements.
